My review of Priceless, by M.A. Church

PricelessPriceless by M.A. Church
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas...

In her new release, Priceless, M A. Church uses her gift of descriptive prose to pull us down into the room, face to face with her characters. We become spectators at a battle of wits and willpower, and a mischievous—if somewhat jaded—Cupid is the referee.

Garrett Shiffler and Randy Jones are two magnets facing the wrong way. There is an intense attraction, but the connection by Randy's pride and Garrett's expectation of getting what he wants—exactly when he wants it. The failure of either man to admit their feelings creates a bash-their-heads-together stalemate, until one of those stubborn magnets finally gets the hint and flips.

Priceless is a classic story of boy-meets-boy. What sets it apart is Church's quick, wry sense of humor and her ability to create perfect, yet frustratingly imperfect characters that we truly care about.

Getting out my Kleenex.

My Photo Finds, Photo Inspirations and other copyrighted images are coming down from this site.

On the advice of a good friend, I'm taking down the copyrighted images from my blog. Instead, whenever possible, I will provide the model's name and a link to the agency(ies) that represent them. There, you may drool as much as you like while I sit back and enjoy not getting sued.

My tumblr blog will remain up for now, as I will need to go through a rigid 12-step process to separate myself from it. If you really feel like taking a step into my head--a frightening prospect, I know--you may do so here:

I appreciate your understanding and hope that you will also consider the laws and consequences of using copyrighted images on your own sites. I love reading all of your stories and blog entries and would be devastated if you were sent to a penal colony for failure to pay royalties.

...okay so that won't happen, but I still wouldn't like to see anyone sued.

Grrr. Family, head colds, heat waves... all contributing to my lack of progress. However, I should have a 2nd chapter up in a few days. Thanks for your patience!

Writing feverishly...

Literally. I'm battling a major head-cold, so it's slow going with "Untitled."

I'll keep you informed.

Priceless by M.A. Church - read an excerpt!

Money may buy a lot of things...except true love.
Because true love is...

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sparks ignite when Cupid takes aim at two mortals in Las Vegas: Randy Jones, an average guy on a company vacation, looks into Garrett’s eyes at a craps table and time stands still. Throwing aside everything he believes, Randy engages in a torrid two-night affair with Garrett—only to panic when he realizes he’s fallen in love.

Cynical billionaire Garrett Shiffler has everything money can buy, and most of his dates can’t see past the dollar signs. Life has taught him that innocence and love are figments of the imagination. But when Randy disappears, taking with him feelings Garrett thought he’d never know, Garrett wages the most important battle of his life to win Randy's love—but this time he fights with his heart, not his bank account.

Meanwhile, Cupid wonders what happened. His golden arrows never fail unless the Fates interfere. If Garrett wants to win Randy back, he’s going to have to do it on his own, because the Fates have other plans for Cupid.

EXCERPT

They stepped closer and Randy’s body was as tense as a drawn bow. What would a suave, sophisticated guy do in this situation? Suave, right. Randy just hoped he didn’t make an idiot out of himself.

Randy’s breathing increased as he chewed his lip. His heart sped up as Garrett leaned into him. Would the kiss be hard and brutal, his mouth claimed by an onslaught of passion that would leave him breathless and bruised? He moaned in surprise as Garrett’s mouth sweetly moved on his.

From one heartbeat to the next, pleasure exploded in Randy’s mind. He hadn’t expected such gentleness. Throwing caution to the wind, he grasped Garrett’s hips and pulled him closer. Garrett’s tongue explored his mouth, that sinful goatee tickling his chin. When Garrett nudged his head to the side and nibbled a path down Randy’s neck, he willingly bared his throat. And moaned again when Garrett sucked hard on the tender skin near his collarbone.

Randy, squirming from the sensations, rubbed his leg up and down Garrett’s thigh. One of Garrett’s hands drifted down and lifted Randy’s leg higher, palming his ass as he kneaded the firm flesh. The electricity that jumped between them had Randy shaking.

“Garrett,” Randy gasped as Garrett found a particularly good spot, “there’s gotta be cameras in here.”

Garrett held Randy tightly for a moment, their bodies crushed together, before he released him and moved away. He mumbled under his breath about how could Randy think, much less clearly, at that moment. Randy leaned against the elevator wall, eyes closed, and tried to bring his rampaging body under control. The elevator dinged and lurched to a stop, causing Randy to stumble into Garrett.

He slid his arm around Randy to steady him and didn’t let go when the doors parted. Garrett pulled Randy toward his suite, throwing the door open. Once inside he slammed the door shut, spun Randy around, and trapped him against the back of the door. He slammed his mouth over Randy’s, picking up where he left off in the elevator until Randy was gasping for air.

“Let me be very clear,” Garrett panted into his mouth. “I want you in my bed. I want you desperate, wild, and begging.”

“I’m to the desperate phase now.” Randy trembled, trapped between him and the door. “Wild is right around the corner, and begging isn’t far behind.”

Garrett’s thumb traced over Randy’s swollen bottom lip. “That’s what I like about you, Randy, you speak your mind and don’t play games. I can’t tell you what a turn on that is for me.”

“I don’t have the first clue how to play games like you’re talking about, nor do I want to.”

“And thank God for it.” That jaded little devil on Garrett’s shoulder rolled his eyes. This guy either was very good, or very innocent. “Now, let me show you my bedroom. I can’t wait much longer to have you in my bed.”

Garrett ushered him through the living area, not giving him time to admire the softly lit main area. He opened a door to a large room that held a beautifully made bed with a sinfully black silk bedspread. The room was done in dark woods and masculine tones with paintings and photography from some extremely well-known artists. It shrieked authority, money, and power. The curtains were open, letting in the light from the city.

Garrett stepped behind Randy and turned him toward the mirrored closet. Garrett unbuttoned his shirt, parted the fabric, and placed his hands on Randy’s stomach. Taking his time, he ran his hands up Randy’s chest, dragging the pleasure out until he reached those perky nipples that begged for attention. Garrett flicked both hard peaks, making Randy arch in his arms. Then he rolled them between his thumb and forefinger as they both watched their reflection.

“So very hot,” Garrett whispered in Randy’s ear as his fingers teased the nubs until Randy moaned.

Randy reached behind him and wrapped his arm around Garrett’s neck, dragging him closer. That bulge that pressed against Randy’s ass was huge and had his imagination sitting up, tail thumping. It had been a long time since a lover affected him this way. Randy leaned his head back against Garrett’s shoulder and watched, heavy-eyed, as Garrett’s hands drifted down and undid his belt.

Chapter 1 of "Untitled"

Here's the first teaser chapter from my new story. It's quite different from my first, but I hope you enjoy it. Please let me know what you think!

:: PROLOGUE ::

I knew vampires exist; everyone knew. In eighteen ninety-six, a group of archaeologists working in southern Germany unearthed a medieval lead casket containing six mummified corpses. On each of the bodies, there was a streak of red paint across the chest and a wooden spike was driven into the heart. No one was taking any chances. Accounts of the burial were found in a nearby church, and the story of the vampires spread.
According to records, in 1457, Lyulf of Drubich, his wife Erzabet, and his four brothers had been accused of vampirism. Hundreds of people had gone missing after the clan settled in the small principality, and it wasn't long before the church intervened. No one knew Lyulf's origins, or how far his reign of terror spread before he was hunted down, slaughtered by Catholic priests and buried in the lead-lined casket for eternity. The humans could finally sleep in peace, knowing that the devils were gone.
However, not every member of Lyulf's house had been exterminated. There were two other brothers, Alder and Secundus, who escaped and fled to France. There they began to rebuild their clans, keeping well out of the church's reach until they were strong enough to get revenge.
In time, Secundus and Alder had created a small army of vampires, but their raging desire to avenge their clan had lessened. Members of their clans melded into human society, living undiscovered by the general population for hundreds of years. That secrecy ended when the archaeologists dug up their long-cursed brothers and put them on display at the Berlin Museum.
The discovery of the supposed vampires in itself did not convince humans that vampires were real. It was only after Lyulf's descendants laid claim to the bodies that all hell broke loose. Alder's clan swept into Berlin, their lust for revenge remembered. Within two days, the archaeologists, museum staff and several other humans were dead.
Secundus had not been a part of the attack, and a few days later—disgusted with the slaughter—he disappeared.

:: CHAPTER ONE ::
"Where have you been, Carter?"
"I haven't left the house," I said.
A wild look crossed his face and his eyes lit with anger. "Liar! I know you have been with him! You reek of his scent. Did he fuck you?" A hard blow landed on my cheek, knocking me to the floor. "Answer me!"
His foot connected with my ribs. I cried out and attempted to drag myself away from him, but he took me by the hair and pulled me to my feet. "Please," I begged. "It was my fault. I seduced him."
"Indeed?"
He released me and I sank onto the bed. When I felt cold hands unbuttoning my pants, I screamed, "No! You can't do this."
"Silence! You must be punished for your infidelity, Carter." My clothes were ripped from my shaking body, and he bound my hands behind my back with a thick piece of wire. When I twisted to try to free myself, pain shot through my wrists. He laughed. "Oh, come now. Surely you don't think you will escape? Keep struggling, though. The movement will make your tunnel contract beautifully. Pardon me for not preparing you, my sweet one, but I must make haste to find your lover and deal with him accordingly."
"God, no! Please! I'll give my life if you spare his. You can torture me for eternity and I will never say his name again."
"How very noble," he sneered. "But you mistake my meaning, Sweet. I do not intend to kill your lover."
Relief washed over me. "Thank—"
"That way, I can watch him suffer after I lay your body at his feet."
Cold, hard dread paralyzed me. Bile churned in my stomach and I stopped struggling. He gripped my hips with bruising strength and thrust into me, making me cry in pain. The last thing I remembered was begging for mercy before his fangs sank into my throat.
ffff
The pain in my head made me cry out. A man was at my bedside almost at once. His voice was soothing, "Calm yourself, Carter. It's all right. You're in the hospital."
"Why?" was what I tried to ask, but it came out as a garbled croak.
The man beside me stroked my hand as he called for the nurse. A young, attractive woman came into the room and said, "Well, he is beautiful, I'll give you that."
"He is the most beautiful being I have ever known." He leaned down and tenderly kissed my temple. I marveled at my body's reaction. I had no idea who this man was, and yet, the moment his lips met my skin, every nerve, every muscle, every ounce of energy was electrified. A delicious, savory scent flowed from him, but I couldn't place what it was. All I knew was that I wanted him, wanted to taste him, and even having the nurse in the room wasn't going to stop me. I put my hand to his neck and pulled his mouth to mine.
The handsome man laughed loudly and said, "I am so glad you have finally awoken, I've been waiting for ages to feel your lips on mine."
I coughed and hacked for a few minutes before I could whisper, "How long was I out?"
The nurse felt my forehead and said, "Ten years."
"What?" I muttered in horror. "Ten years? Whu…I don't understand."
My lover—for somehow I knew he was just that—stroked my arm and shushed me. "Yes, my love. You have been in sort of coma, so your mind could heal itself of the horrible memories. Do you recall anything?"
"A…a nightmare," I said. His eyes widened, and I hurried to reassure him. "It wasn't you in the dream."
I told him about the man who beat me so severely and he exhaled slowly. "I am sorry you have been so trapped within your own mind. By the time I found you, I had very little time to turn you. Only moments later, you would have died. I could not lose you."
"Turned me?" I asked in horror. He opened his mouth wide and I saw his canine teeth lengthen slightly. I shrank away from him and said, "But…I feel fine. Kind of."
"It is my blood that has healed your body, love. Worked like a charm—just as I said it would." He looked at the nurse and grinned. Turning back to me, he said, "Your mind could not be healed by me, though. It had to have the time to heal itself after the attack."
"What attack?" I snapped. "I don't remember anything but that nightmare! I don't know you, or what day or even year it is. I can barely remember my own name."
The stunning, tall god of a man knelt by my bed and kissed my hand. "My name is Secundus."

New story is coming soon!

Next up is the story of Carter Denwright, who wakes one morning in a hospital bed with no idea what happened to him. One thing he's certain of, however: the fangs in his mouth definitely weren't there when he fell asleep...
